The American job market is starting to show some muscle.

The U.S. employment report indicated 216,000 job were added in March, bringing the nation's unemployment rate down to 8.8% and further pointing to a continued recovery.

For dislocated workers searching for permanent work, turning to a temporary employment agency might seem counterintuitive.

Experts in the industry, though, say that in today's uncertain economy, partnering with a temporary employment agency should be among a job seeker's first options.

Temporary employment agencies match employers and qualified employees in assignments lasting from a week to a year or longer. The temporary assignments can supplement unemployment benefits and often lead to permanent jobs.

Tiffany Fulcher found herself in a situation last August that has become all too common in recent times.

Her employer, Credit Union Family Service Center, closed, and the Kalamazoo woman was without a job.

With reports of people hunting for months and even years for a job, the prospects of finding employment quickly might have discouraged many, but not Fulcher. She had a strategy she’d tried before and would try again.

The American Staffing Association (ASA) Staffing Index for temporary and contract employment activity reached a 100-week high of 97 for the week of August 23-29, the highest index level since a reading of 97 in the week of September 29, 2008 (see chart above, data here).
